:::CPR015::: KC QUILTY - CLOVER/CORIANDER

Clover/Coriander, the debut release from Brooklynites kc quilty, is the culmination of three years of protracted gestation in which guitarist/vocalist Sadie Dupuis, an MIT dropout-turned-Columbia poet, and drummer Julian Fader (ex-Le Rug) recorded and re-recorded their creepy, catchy Pixies-styled anthems in a bevy of basements across the East Coast.

Their patience paid off. Clover/Coriander is a taut, fiery group of songs that recalls lo-fi stalwarts Sebadoh and Guided By Voices just as well as it embraces new wave shoegazers Autolux and Deerhunter. Recorded by Fader and Carlos Hernandez (Ava Luna) and featuring a shifting line-up of guest musicians, the album traverses effortlessly from the “gloriously pulverizing” guitars of “Supernova” to “Mr Benjamin Watson,” a track lauded as “the best song Blur never got to write for their self-titled album” by AWmusic.ca. Over all of this, Dupuis’ vocals fluctuate between sweetly fragile, lazily sarcastic and violently confrontational, resulting in an aesthetic akin to PJ Harvey’s Rid of Me.

Mixed by Jared O’Connell (A Brief Smile) and mastered by TW Walsh (Soft Drugs, ex-Pedro The Lion), Clover/Coriander is “power-packed…grunge-rock glory” (Praise for Wallflower) and “speaker-rattling…slacker anti-energy” (Ampeater Review).

Every decade, the battle between disco and rock rages anew. Autotune and ‘80s synth throwbacks defined the ‘00s. And just as grunge took cues from ‘70s hard rock, Cooling Pie Records bets the 2010s will have you rummaging through your Sub Pop Singles and watching Reality Bites on repeat. kc quilty’s already established their dedication to ‘90s revivalism. Throw on your thrift store flannel and come along with them.

From the ashes of A Brief Smile: Sea Monster

If you're one of the two people who worships CPR as the demigods that we are, you're familiar with the recently defunct A Brief Smile. A Brief Smile melted faces in New York from 2004 through 2009 but eventually, the rock lifestyle takes it's toll. Things need to change, right? You can only bang so many groupies and blow so many lines of pure crushed gold before it gets tiring. So A Brief Smile had to die. But it's okay because that means that there will probably be two or three awesome bands where before there was only one.

We already showed you what super-multi-instrumentalist-with-a-7-octave-voice/drummer Louie Glaser has been up to under his moniker Thank You Music. Now we present Sea Monster.

Sea Monster is (so far) Jared (keyboardist-who-had-like-10-different-octave-pedals) and DL (Jason-Schwartzman-doppleganger/asian-dude-from-thrice-doppleganger). Considering the fact that Cooling Pie's top secret headquarters are a mere 10 feet from Sea Monster's, we've heard surprisingly little about how these songs came about. What we can tell you is that the three songs DL and Jared recently released for free on Bandcamp are fully realized and, honestly, they sound fucking great.

For lack of a better way to put this, here's the equation we came up with for Sea Monster:

(Mellon-Collie-Era-Pumpkins) + (Strokes - Douchebaggery) / Beatles Rock Band

Does that work? Whatever, we'll shut the fuck up. Just listen to our favorite tune, Captain Trips:

::CPR020::: DAY SLEEPER - WONDERLAND KID (EP)

© 2009 day sleeper. cover image by daniel obzejta.
tracks one, two and four recorded at the WERS live performance studio, august 2009; engineered by jared detsikas, mike mastrangelo, & mike moschetto; mixed/mastered by mike moschetto at WERS production.
track three recorded at the vivacious int’l recording complex & pancake house; recorded/mixed by cas kaplan & justin danforth.
track five recorded at tt the bear’s place, cambridge, ma june 24th, 2009.
all songs by day sleeper.

Well look who's back with a lil EP! It's The Daysleepers, more commonly and correctly known as Day Sleeper. The first time we heard from these guys, we were just putting out their full length Drop Your Sword as CPR006. That album showed promise but the real coming out party happened with Day Sleeper's contribution to CPR's first compilation Crust Never Sleeps. Have I lost you yet? No? Good, because with their newest release Wonderland Kid, Day Sleeper delivers.

The "single" here is Windows Left Open and that's a good thing since it's probably my favorite. You can download it above, the rest of the songs you can only stream (for now). Apparently, the album was mostly recorded at WERS in Boston. I had no idea they had a nice studio there, but damn these songs sound great. I'm also partial to the first track "Wait Stay".

We're up to CPR020 and we couldn't be more proud to have this gem as our twentieth release. We'll get back to you with more news about possibly Day Sleeper shows in New York and elsewhere as soon as we know.

Download Wonderland Kid on iTunes
Email Day Sleeper to get the correct mp3s if you buy it. Apparently the iTunes mp3s are corrupt. Email them!

:::CPR019::: AVA LUNA - SERVICES

Ava Luna - Clips by Environmental Aesthetics

Well, don't ever fault us for being a little late. This is Ava Luna's newest release and it's probably their most assured yet. They've been getting a lot of good press lately and the Village Voice has taken notice so it's probably just a matter of time before they get too big for our lil operation over here. As it stands, we present you the album. If you'd like to order a screenprinted CD-R copy, please email coolingpierecords@gmail.com and we'll get one to you. Enjoy!

Empire State of Mind Makes No Sense

Help me out here people:

Jay-Z's single "Empire State of Mind" featuring Alicia Keys is undeniably a fantastic fucking song. I've been hearing it all over Z100 for the last couple of days and it makes my day, every day, multiple times per day. However, there's one thing that really bugs me about Alicia Keys' part. Justin and Sarah and I walked from 14th st. to Morningside Heights last night and we spent a good portion of that time discussing this.

The chorus lyric is "Concrete jungle where dreams are made of" repeatedly. This doesn't make any grammatical sense. Think about it. We can agree that "concrete jungle" = New York. So plugging New York in instead, we get, "New York where dreams are made of". We can furthermore assume that since she's a Columbia University dropout, she understands the how colons work. So let's say she meant "New York: Where dreams are made of". That is wrong. It should be "where dreams are made." I briefly convinced myself I was hearing "where dreams are made up" but I checked it and that's not what she's saying.

Alicia is definitely wrong here. Someone needs to tell her.

Xmas Celebration!

Yo! Merry Xmas from CPR! We got a little present for everyone out there: Sadie of kc quilty recorded a cover of Weezer's "Christmas Celebration" in her basement and sent it to me and I'm putting it up here in honor of the holiday that I don't technically celebrate since I'm a Jew. Still, I'm finally learning to get into the spirit so here's her cover, literally five minutes after it was recorded:

Sadie Dupuis - Christmas Celebration (Weezer Cover) by coolingpierecords

Damn, if that don't get the blood flowing, then I don't know what will. Maybe some eggnog? Maybe a sexy santa?

I thought so...

Merry XMAS!

::: CP017 ::: KC QUILTY / POCKETKNIFE - SIIYA/BUY BACK THE BOAT 7"

Hey kiddos...our new site is taking a bit longer to get up than I had hoped. Still, nobody can stop our furious flow of releases. So here with are with CPR's inaugural 7". kc quilty + pocketknife split this one...kc quilty's "Siiya" is going to be on their upcoming full length Clover/Coriander, out January 22nd. You might recognize Pocketknife's "Buy Back The Boat" from our own Crust Never Sleeps compilation. Now you can hear it again...on vinyl! I personally recommend you go buy the record and then play both songs at 33rpm. Everything's so slow...sooo sloooow..."Siiya" turns into smeary sludge metal and "Buy Back The Boat" sounds like smoking a shitload of opium and listening to Radiohead...or something. Anyways, that oughta pique your interest, right? You gotta get this thing.
